Chunk that plastic piece in the garbage and get a used front wheel bearing or most hardware stores sell cheap bearings in the nut and bolt section. I think it's 1 3/8 OD but measure to be sure. Gonna be a nice little unit when you get done.
Todd he's working on a Cyclops, the plastic piece is fine on these steering box's. They have a CV joint just above that bushing so they don't get any side to side load.

Steve fix or replace the follower as Todd mentioned, replace to 2 ball bearings and the foam seal. You can make a seal out of closed cell foam. I have a roll of this stuff so this is what I use.

Ooops! I forgot this was a Cyclops. I use the same foam that Sam does too and it worked for me. Here are the bearings and cone that you will need. IIRC they changed the cone a little. Has anyone had any issues with them fitting in the Cyclops column?

I'm not positive but I think the Cyclops box is a little different. This is what Cub calls for.
741-3021 RETAINER/BALL ASSY $17.92 ea

703-1029 CUP-BEARING $4.99 ea

That said, normally the "Cup" doesn't need to be replaced. What usually happens is that the plastic spacer between the balls fails and the balls move to one side.

Todd and Sam, as always- thank you for your knowledge and input! I was looking at the rebuild kits with the IH-71930-C91number that include the 2 sets ball bearings and the cups but was concerned of changes between a Ross steering box and these CCC boxes. This one is stamped CCC. I will order parts from local dealer. They have been real good on prices so far.

If I had access to a milling machine and good machinist I bet they could turn the end of the cam follower stud and reuse it. I don't have anyone I the area however.

Steve,

Just in case you don't want to fix that cam follower... Jeff in PA makes cam them for the Ross box... I'm sure he could whip one up for a CCC box... I believe the only diff is they are a bit longer

Looking good!!

Got the front and rear crank seals out. Parts did not make it today. Probably Monday. Pulled the steering CV joint out and cleaned the old knarly grease out. Applied new grease and put it back together. Then I cleaned the 42 inch deck. Paint is deteriorating but no holes in the deck. Sharpen the blades tomorrow.

Looks like it is coming along, won't be long before you are cutting some grass. While you have the motor out I would change the gear on the starter, easy to do now.
Nice deck by the way!

Looking good Steve... I've been there done that many times on the getting in too deep part!!

That's what happens when you try to fix something right and the previous owners didn't care or were patch artists!!

But when you are done, somebody will have a nice tractor!!

I'd be tempted to keep it!! I have that problem too often!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
