Installed the PTO side main seal. That was tenuous. It started to roll funny but I believe it ended up fine. New case breather and gaskets in. New oil dip stick tube grommet. That was a nightmare. The cracked one was brittle and came out in chunks. Got the good original head for cylinder 2 installed. Valves, push rods, and all torqued into place. Put the new head in place on cylinder one. Torqued it down. Just realized there is no valve seal on top of the exhaust side guide. Son of a #@!*&$!!! Came new with the valves installed. The other heads had a valve seal on both valves. This new head should also.....right? Quitting for tonight. Have to call Jack's small Engine tomorrow and rip them a new one. Progress but at a snails pace.

Question. If I have to pull the new head back off to put a new valve seal on do I need a new head gasket? I have already torqued the head on to the 160 inch-pounds specified. Or can I simply take it off, do what I need to do, put it back on, retorque it, and all will be well?

I'm pretty sure they made a change on the heads and no longer use a seal on the exhaust.

Thanks Sam. You are right. I checked with Briggs and Stratton also. They do not install valve seals on the exhaust valves. I put two new valve seals on the original head. My dealer said the same, exhaust side does not need the seal. Good. Hopefully I can get the flywheel side crank seal in tonight. Then the Mags, new diode wire, backing plate, starter, stator, and flywheel

Put the starter on before the backing plate,it will be easy peasy.

Got some late night time with the engine. Put the flywheel side of the crank oilseal in. Put the rest of the rocker arms in the new head, torqued them down, and got the push rods in. Only then did I look at my starter (as a wise and learned member here suggested). Yup- I failed to realize the starter gear has some damage. Looks much worse in person than those pictures. Oh and one more time... I will search for those parts tomorrow. If I only realized this a week ago.

Finished rehabing the seat slides for my 2284 and put that all together. That needed finishing cuz the lawn be a growing! Hoping my steering box parts are in for the 1440 so that can be finished and reinstalled.

You can flip that starter pinion 180* and get a lot more use out of it.
