Default Thinking about buying a QA42

There is a local QA42 available. I haven't looked at it yet, but I might. My plan is to get my 147 back together and running. I want to see how it runs after the rebuild. When I rebuilt it, I torqued the rod bolts to 280 in/lbs, have around .010 crankshaft end play, and around .060 camshaft end play. I also adjusted the valve clearance as per the service manual. everything was done according to the book so she should run great, I hope. I'm hoping for a 1st start Friday or Saturday. I have been working on it an hour or 2 a day. Today, I installed the breather, timing gear cover, flywheel, shroud, coil, and points. I'm going to use the points that I got with the engine for now. I'm thinking about buying one of the solid state ignition units, but I want to make sure it runs before I spend any more money.

If the engine runs well, which it should I think I might buy that snowthrower. I was also thinking about maybe selling my jd 37a so I could have a little more money.... not sure about that yet though, it would still be a good backup. What I might do is get a blower for the Cub and mount my 42 blade on my 112 then i would have 1 tractor with a blade and one with a blower. I don't know if it makes any sense to do that.

By the way the QA42 is selling for $200 for a complete snowthrower, I think I could talk the guy down to $150.

Cam end play is 0.005/0.010". You have WAY too much cam end play. That's going to knock really bad and sound like the engine is coming apart.

oops, i meant to say .006. i didnt have enough zeros when i wrote my post. im sorry. anyways, i was looking right at the book when i put it back together. i used the appropraite shim in the side of the cam as well. i do look at the book when i put an engine back together and i use a feeler gauge set as well. i dont even know if it is possible to have .06 camshaft end play, lol. the cam would have to be extremely worn out.

LOL no problem, we just didn't want you to accidentally mess up a fresh motor. I look at the book too, but sometimes I think I get dyslexic as the day goes on and I misread numbers, ROF.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
