Default K-321

I have a chance to buy a K-321 at good price. The owner(local mower shop) says that the engine is fine except it needs a governor rebuild. Looking at the engine it does have the governor arm hanging loose from the side of the block. I also noticed that the engine must be from a Quietline since the dipstick goes through the block at the right corner and it has the new type starter, not a starter generator and also an electric PTO. I'm looking to put this in an old 129 but have the manual PTO engagement lever, and its set up for a starter generator. Anybody see any issues with, first off, the governor being broken, and secondly being able to adapt this to the 129

It should bolt right in to the 129 the only thing you would have to do is modify the wiering harnes some. As for the govenor it takes a complete teardown of the engine to replace.

Thanks,ijones, but I was wondering how common governor failures are? This one seems to have the shaft broken where it exits the block. Possibly an overspeed?

Sometimes the spot weld that holds the tab on the governor cross shaft breaks off. That sounds like what happened to this one. Some of them weren't welded very well.

It is easier to find a wire harness from a Quiet Line Cub Cadet and intall that harness in your 129. The only mod that needs done is to the area that holds the switch.

My Son and I change his 86 over to a Quiet Line style motor.

Is that a mini muffler in the last pic? If so how good does it do. I am wanting to put a stack on the 128 and the 169 and wanted to use that style muffler.

No muffler.....straight pipe. It is loud. Too loud for me.

This what was on Son's 86 in the picture:

The exhaust pipe is longer in the first picture. An old hot rod trick I learned years ago is to paint the exhaust pipe with cheap paint and run the motor awhile. There will be an area where the paint quits burning off. That is the area where you want to cut the pipe. In theory it is suppose for the motor to make the most power.

Some may be wandering what the tape/wrap type fabric is on the exhaust system. I think the product is called Header Wrap. This wrap keeps the heat inside the exhaust. It aslo helps keeping decals from melting.

The motor has around 30 hours run time on it. Decals still look like new.

I would stay away from a stack. You will have problems mowing around trees....not worth the aggervation.

This tractor is used for pulling and plowing.

Thanks I appreciate the input. I saw the clamps and think I was seeing something else, now that I look closer. LOL.
The 128 won't be used for anything other than plowing a small area and maybe trailer work. The 169 will possibly run a tiller later on and be polished on. I'll relegate the 1250 to mowing until I can find a 149.
