Default FNG looking for advice!

Howdy, folks....first post, and I'm looking for some advice as to what to look for.

Story; Have been offered, free, an 1862 by a golf buddy. It's been many years since run, and was parked for what he described as a leak, somewhere mid-frame. He also "thought" it had a cracked transaxle that had caused the leak. There's two decks, and a mule drive to go along with it. If I don't take the offer, it's going to go out on his rural "curb" for the scrappers to haul away. At this point, I'm not going to let that happen.

What I'm asking you all is, what might be the most obvious thing to look at.

The research I've done so far suggest maybe the hydraulic pump, or hoses, but maybe the power steering. Might there be a common malady that these suffered in that area of the package?

This will be my first foray into Cubs, so I'm a REAL beginner at this. My previous "experience" is with Craftsman front-engine riders, and those are belt drive with internal pumps for the hydrostats, sooo......
And yes, I'm looking for service manuals for it to assist me in real time.

Any advice you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.....Roger

WOW..... a FREE 1862 with 2 mower decks....
You should change your i.d. to Bucky Lastard.
Anyways, get it hidden in your shed before Lew (a.k.a. darkminion) gets wind of it,
and Welcome!

Default Update with pics.....

And here she is, sitting on my trailer in my back yard.
I do have the hood and grille, and the other three tires seem in decent shape.

I also got the extras. Two, 46" decks, one of those has never been mounted. Looks like a deck lift "carriage", and two mule drives, but I could use some better identification than my Cub-uneducated brain can do.

Thanks.....Roger

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
