I’ve been working on my 2011 i1050 tractor with the Kohler Vtwin engine. It quit charging the battery so I googled how to troubleshoot the charging system. Took the engine cover off and loosened the voltage regulator to test the stator. I clamped the regulator to the engine shielding and used my multimeter to check acv between the outer two pins on the regulator and got 42 volts ac which I thought meant the stator was working. I then checked dcv on the center pin to ground and got 0 volts which I took as a bad voltage regulator. I bought a new regulator on Amazon and hooked it up and checked voltage again. 42 acv on the two outer pins, but only 7.5 vdc on the center pin to ground. Thought I had received a bad regulator so I returned it and bought a different regulator. Hooked that one up and got the same issue, only 7.5 volts on the center pin and it’s not charging.
What am I missing here, could both new regulators be faulty? |

Do you have the connector on the v/r and the battery hooked up when getting the 7.5 vdc reading?
If not, the reading may be erroneous because I believe the battery is needed to supply some "bias" or "load" to the regulator. Also, the v/r should be making a good ground connection to the engine shroud and make sure that all your other connections are clean and tight. |

Yes, I had all wiring including the battery connected during testing. I had the v/r clamped to the engine shield so I could access the connector for testing. Just to make sure it wasn’t charging I tested battery voltage with the engine running full throttle and only see 12.5 vdc.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
