I've been keeping an eye on some cracks in the dash tower, right in the corner of the bend to were it mounts on the frame. There's a crack on each side on the engine side and they flex quite a bit with steering, probably 2"-3" long. Is replacement with a good used one the only option or would a weld hold there? Is this a common problem that is fixable? I'm looking for ideas. It is a little rusty but not rotten.

My 106 and 107 both have an about 1" crack in the dash tower on the front right hand side just above the 2 90 degree bends at the bottom of the tower. Neither seem to be any sort of issue, but sounds like you've got a much larger crack. My 106 has clearly been welded at the base of the dash tower at some point, maybe you could weld it up? I should mention that it cracked in a different place than where it was originally welded.
Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the cracks and it's too dark out to go take any.

Mines probably about half way through... if it was the inner bend I would feel ok welding it. But the outer bend is tricky I think.

Those areas like to crack on gear drives from working the clutch. It tends to flex there causing cracking.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that as a possibility... I can't really watch it for flexing while pressing the clutch pedal, I haven't noticed it while sitting on the seat, but it's very noticeable while steering, the whole dash moves under the hood.

So that crack is in about the same spot where my 106 was clearly welded. Who knows how long ago that was but it was welded in that bottom area, the whole length of the tower, on both sides. It seems to be holding up pretty well.
The current crack is small and up about an inch or 2 from the welded spot. The strain and extra vibrations from the clutch definitely play a big factor in the cracks, not sure how my 107's tower cracked but I definitely know the tractor was abused at some point in it's life so that could have something to do with it. So can it be welded? Yes, it definitely can be and as long as it's done right should last a long while. Would it be easy? Probably not. I'm definitely not a welder so anything for me would be difficult

I’ve never seen a problem when steering. It isn’t really mounted to the tower. It just passes through it. I’ll have to take a closer look in the spring when I drag it back out.

I've got a similar crack on my 123 . Metal fatigue from vibration I'm guessing. Hasn't propagated in 10 yrs.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
