Default Broken Shifter - 126

Something in the shifter on my 126 broke. I could still get it into all gears, but the shifter is loose and flops around. What is the most likely problem, and how much work should I expect to be involved in fixing this? Will the trans have to come out, or is there enough room with just the fender pan off? Obviously I will need to take it apart to see what broke, just trying to get some ideas first.

Most likely the shift forks loosened up. They may just need tightening or like one I had in my 126 cracked. I was able to repair the cracked one I had.
Pull your fenders, unbolt shifter. The forks bolt on and clamp to the rods. If they are loose and slip on the rods that is the problem. See if they can be tightened.

OH!.. If they just loosened up,. Position both forks to neutral position and verify its actually in neutral. The part where the shifter goes into the forks should be in alignment as well. Tighten them down to the rods. Reinstall shifter. It took me longer to unbolt my foot rests than to open shifter and repair

Pull the shift plate off the top of the transmission and see if the cup on the shift handle hasn't broken.

I had that happen to a 104 years ago. I brazed it back together and it's still in one piece.

Thanks guys. I don’t think I could be lucky enough for them to have just loosened up, but that would be nice. I’ll pull it apart tonight and take a look.

The handle is broken loose from the cup.
You have to be careful when welding this back up and be sure to get the handle in the correct orientation to the cup or the handle will more than likely hit the fender pan somewhere during the shift range.

There are couple of little rubber "O" rings that go on there as well under the 2 spring retainers.

Supposed to help keep the water from running down the shaft into the transmission.

I took the shifter off. It looks like it’s cracked around the cup, and one of the forks was loose. I’ll take it to work tomorrow and fix it, and should have it back together tomorrow night. A much easier fix than I expected.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
