Default 2072 power steering

While using the 2072 today, I noticed hydraulic oil coming out of the top of the steering column just under the steering wheel. Obviously the shaft seal is leaking on the steering motor. I see that the seal kit is available from Cub for $114. In addition, there is a spring kit and a roller kit for another $7 and $14 respectively. I'm very comfortable working with hydraulics, having maintained aerial bucket trucks for the local power utility for the last 31 years. My questions - is there any cheaper source for the rebuild parts and any tips or suggestions from those of you who have had to rebuild one of these PS motors. Thanks! Stan

Thanks Travis, the JD kit is about $30 cheaper than Cub so I'll pick one up. After researching the Parker part # SK000097 I found prices ranging from a low of $83 (JD) to $298 (from an aircraft company), a wide range for sure! If the individual o rings could be identified, there probably isn't $30 worth there. Oh well, they have it and I need it, guess that's what makes the world go round!

Hey Doc, I haven't picked them up yet but on the next one I'm going to do I will use one for the Steiner brand tractors. Messicks has them pretty cheap too. http://www.messicks.com/st/3513 Look under Implement Hydraulic System

Part# 21-SK000011(looks like a Parker # to me)

The "O" rings go for $.03 cents but there are other seals in there.
There is a write up on here if you have not been into one, best to look @ it as you can get the valve plates in wrong and it no workie also those little "Jesus" springs fly faster than a speeding bullet.
And yes Deere is less expensive, for same kit.

Pay attention of the assembly notches on the outside of the stack up plates.
Best to make your own marks with a scribe.

Definitely will be very careful on tear down. I've done some steering motors on big loaders at work. Shop manual, clean work area and lots of scribe marks will be number one on the list. It appears that the SK000011 kit supersedes to the SK000097 on the Cub site and looking at the photo of the 21-SK000011 kit at Messick's for the Steiner tractors, it's the same content as the other kits. It's also the cheapest one.
Thank's for the tip Oak, you saved me about $60. I owe you a cold one!

Well, I pulled the column today and tore it down after carefully marking everything. Seals are shot. The kit came from Messick's and it's the right one, so I started back together. One wrong move and three springs went sproing!!! I found only two of course. So parts are on order again. Also, there is supposed to be a loose check ball in one of the ports. That's missing as well. So how did your day go!!!!

Yep, had cell phone in hand and a printed copy of the Parker HGF repair manual open on the bench. As i lifted a segment I snapped a photo. The trouble came on reassembly when I had the loaded port plate with the springs going back into the valve body. The springs went flying and I could only find two of the three. As for the check ball on the port plate, I never saw it as I pulled the section during dissassembly. This steering motor has been apart before. There are signs of another mechanic's scribe marks. Like many things we all have to do with these old machines, we have to undo or discover what someone else has done (or not done).

BTDT had to run up to the JD dealer and get a set, he laughed said yep, we keep 2 sets in stock.
After a bit of practice, you learn how to load them ever so carefully, and put it together.
I found one on a unit that was squashed when it was reassembled by someone.
Best of luck

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
