Default Should this starter pulley be this lose?

So what I have is a pulley that just seems to lose on the shaft on my 127. Originally when I started on this project the starter pulley was lose and eating away at the bolt head holding the S/G adjusting bracket. I made a quick video to help explain what I'm talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWcKaIgdK3E Heres a shot of the key and the shaft when I took off the starter pulley basket. I think it must of worn the inside of the collar on the pulley. What say you?....

Measure the crank shaft where the pulley sits on the crank shaft and measure ID of the pulley. Both measurements should be around 1 inch. The crank is undersize or the pulley ID is oversize. Hopefully it's the pulley.

Pulley will need to be replaced if the pulley ID is oversize.

There should be 2 set screws holding the pulley on. One is on the keyway and the other is 90 degrees to the keyway set screw. To help the set screw from coming lose I use longer set screw and a jam nut on both set screws.

I checked the size of both several times. If anything the pulley is a bit oversize measuring from the back 1.0040 +-. Can't get an accurate reading from the front due to the basket. The shaft is good. That keyway on the pulley is probably a little flared out too. It's hard to tell. I can put new key stock in the slot and it seems like it should be tighter than what it its.

.004 may be enough to cause your problem. I would try another pulley and use 2 set screws.

I think you may be right. I'll try an ad in the wanted section and hopefully come across one.
I'll still go with the longer set screws and add a jam nut on them. I have the longer set screw and jam nut on the locking ring for the PTO. Thanks for your responses on this.

Thanks for bringing up this subject...I have a 129 with similar issue...and it makes a lot of noise as the engine runs...I can only find 1 set screw on mine, without having pulled the front apart....where did you find the longer set screws and jam nuts for them?...thank you for any help....Mark

McMaster-Carr has the longer set screws. Or you could get lucky and find some in stock at your local Fastenal store.

So what I have is a pulley that just seems to lose on the shaft on my 127.
So what I did was cut some small strips from a feeler gauge (.008) and put one on either side of the shaft and one on top of the key and it took the movement right out of it. That saved me at least $50 by not having to buy another Starter pulley. I did add a longer set screw with a jam nut but that may interfere with the PTO on the back side. I can't check to see if that'll be a problem since I don't have my new/rebuilt PTO yet.

Just a suggestion....
Before you tighten the set screws down for good, you may want to mount the starter/gen to the block to align the pulleys. Also, you can't get the bolt that holds the s/g adjustment arm to the block into it's hole after the pulley is on, so you will want to mount that first also.

Thanks Ironman for the good advice on the set screws. I did put the S/G on after tightening the set screws. I can loosen them and give it a spin to set it in place and retighten them. I knew about the arm........So, 1 and 3 after Mon Night?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
