Default Magic Smoke?

Just became the owner (too soon to tell if I'm a proud owner) of a Cub Cadet 126. PO said it smoked "a little"; this man is delusional. I got it home and started and only in cartoons have I seen something like this. It looked like the city mosquito spray truck had parked in front of my garage it was so thick!

Does all this smoke ALWAYS lead to "You need new piston rings, and maybe a boring & oversize piston"?

Not always, did you check the oil leve befor starting it?

Cause a over filled motor will fill a small town up with smoke in a hurry.

On another note:

for sale cub cadet, smokes only when the motor is running, easy on gas, seldom used, only cut grass on windy days,

One of the first things that I do whenever I bring one home is change out the oil and add some Marvel Mystery Oil to clean out the inside and see what happens after that before I do any major overhaul of the engine. Then I reassess the situation in a while to see how bad it is. Often, that is all that I needed to do!!!

I had a 127 that I picked up some time ago with the same symptoms. You didn't say what color the smoke was, but mine was blowing white smoke like one of those sky writing planes.

The oil was at least a quart over filled, and the carb was continuously dumping fuel into the engine. The needle was gummed up along with the float. I rebuilt the carb, and changed the oil, and head gasket, and....no more smoke.

Thanks everyone. I've got the carb off and will investigate further this evening.

I really appreciate all the suggestions.

Have a great weekend.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
