Well, I got a lot of good advice, but in the end my first guess was the correct one. Take a look at the valve head. Kohler Command 22 HP. If it starts backfiring and diesels you might want to look before this happens.

Did you ever do a Compression test on it??? One of the first things I do with an OHV engine as they are prone to having the rocker arm bolts loosen after time or the valve lash nuts backing off.... In fact I check my own engines quite often esp if I hear a difference in exhaust tone.... But of you are one of those that wear headphones you wouldn't notice something like that....
Replace the pushrod, check the threads on the pedestal check all other valves to include lash and continue on.... |

No, I never did a compression check. Actually, I've only owned this tractor for about a year and it was well cared for most of it's life, but abused by the owner's grandkids later. It's been a great runner until this happened, and I asked plenty of people including several dealerships and everyone except one person felt it was not a push rod. More of a project than I wanted, but still it's a good tractor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
