Default Model 1 tiller is sluggish

Busted a hydraulic line today, but that's another story. My Model 1 tiller isn't operating as it usually does. It's seems to be getting weak and lazy. Will only accept tilling the top layer, as soon as I sink it in any deeper it hangs up and won't spin. I checked the gearbox and has plenty of fluid. Is this tiller a sealed unit or should it be serviceable? Maybe pulley up front going bad? Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

As far as I know there is nothing on in the tiller that could be slipping. If I had to take a wild guess I would say it's probably the PTO on the engine.

The little pulley on the gearbox that takes the short belt typically slips first. Make sure you have your idler pulleys (on the mule drive) are tight (drive belt tight) and the tensioner on top of the tiller tight as well. Proper tension on both belts is the first step.

Both tensioners were tight (mule drive and tiller). A lot of hydraulic fluid leaking down and may be affecting the belts.. not sure. Thanks for the replies!

Oil on the belt will make it slip and also degrade the belt making failure more likely.

Also check your friction disk thickness on the PTO. If the portion that does not fit in between the two plates is much thicker than the portion being clamped. it could be worn out.

Hopefully that's all it was, the oil on the belt. On a side note, hopefully the belt is still in good shape.. seems to be. That belt took me a while to find. Will check PTO, and post my findings.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
