OK, replaced the starter and solenoid on my 1882. Apparently I've done something wrong with the wiring - IT SPINS BACKWARDS!

I'm going to attempt to attach a pic of the mess I've made. If there is anything obvious please tell me.

As a note - I believe (or I think I remember) the starter spun correctly before replacing the solenoid (it must have as there are marks on the teeth (cogs) of the starter)

NOTES: The red cable standing straight up comes from the battery positive post
The red cable with the heat shrink is going to the starter (only one possible connection there)
The green wire connects to a red wire and is terminated between the solenoid base and the frame of the tractor with a ring terminal (doesn't show the termination
in the pic)
The fuse holder (red and black wires together) are on the battery side of the solenoid.
The red wire with the female quick slide is connected to the solenoid male tab.

I'm guessing I've got this configuration discombobulated.

The positive and negative is correct. I suspect I've got something wrong at the solenoid.

You sure? I don't think even if you had the battery hooked up backwards it would spin in reverse. The starter for sure won't engage even if it is spinning in reverse. The bendix is a screw style. If it spun backwards, it would pull the starter gear to the starter, not out to engage the flywheel. Even if you wired the solenoid wrong, it wouldn't spin in reverse. You better check again.

The solenoid has NOTHING to do with the rotation of the starter.

If the starter spins in reverse, you have two situations
(A) Battery Cables hooked up wrong
(B) You have the wrong starter.

While at rest the starter gear is towards the starter (against the starter). When power is applied it spins counter clockwise (as viewed from the gear end of the starter) and does not leave the position its in while resting. It does not engage.

There has to be more to the story. Why was the solenoid replaced?

Could the gear be just stuck due to lack of lube or a little burr on the shaft. Have you tried to turn the gear manually?

Then it is spinning the correct direction. Do as DeltaCub suggested above.

After replacing the starter I was getting only a "clicking" sound from the solenoid. So I replaced it as well.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
