Have a 1782 with a leaking Hydro and would like some advice.
During last season the tractor started accelerating on it's own. From half way or higher the speed control lever would just creep up to full speed on it's own. The higher the throttle the faster the creep. This spring I adjusted the speed control linkage but the only result was a very week reverse. Won't climb a slight incline in reverse. Still creeping in forward as before adjustment. I noticed a lot of hydro oil and dirt all over the rear so I power washed it good and see fluid just pouring out of somewhere up high on the unit behind the filter/ valve housing. I'm intimidated by this and wondering if I should attempt a repair myself or seek a qualified individual to assist. Any suggestions or service recommendations welcome. Paul Also any good treads I can read to begin to understand what I'm working with? |

If you can use wrenches, and follow directions, you can fix the leaks in the rear of your tractor. Sam Mac has many good threads to read through about your (and similar) machines.

The big brown truck stopped by this afternoon and I had some quality time with the tractor. Swapped out both the relief valves and did a Hy Tran and filter change. The leak was primarily the reverse valve. No more leak. As indicated above I had adjusted the linkage to stop the accelerator creep to no success and found the tractor was lacking overall speed in both reverse and forward. I spent an hour adjusting the linkage and though I could get one or the other when balanced I was not getting the same performance as prior to the leak and linkage adjustment. With the wife calling for dinner I quickly checked the throttle and the cable was slipping at 7/8 open.
Now she works as advertised and better than before. The ags with the windshield fluid are keeping me from burning the lawn. Love this tractor. Thanks all for the help. Paul Took j-mech's advice and went lookn for a shop... Didn't find one so I brought her back home and fixed it myself.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
