The Delco 1101691 S/G in my 149 needs replacing. I was hoping it only needed new brushes but when I opened the S/G about the only part that looked in good shape were the brushes. The armature magnets had cracks and the field coil had broken wires and melted insulation. Also a bronze bushing in the end cap was worn egg-shaped into the steel cap. I don't understand why but my S/G does not have a bearing like the ones in the rebuild kits.
I'm thinking of bringing it to a shop to see how much it would cost to rebuild but field coils go for $55, armatures $58, and brushes $10 so I expect the cost to be far more than the $133 I paid for a rebuild in 2003 for my other 149. On eBay are aftermarket S/G's for $105 delivered. I presume these are made in China and I wonder if anyone has had experience with these. Some Cub Cadet aftermarket parts made in China can be good, such as the carbs, but others such as the starter I put in my 682 failed within a year. |

buy another tractor for $100 and take the S/g off it and put on yours.

No magnets in the armature, just winding's.
If the the windings are not shorted or open it is fine ( A growler test and meter will tell the tail there, and a new set of bushings will take care of the bearing problem if the armature shaft is not too undersize. If the field coils are open or shorted then they need replaced if just the insulation is bad, a coating of glyptal will fix that most times. |

Roy I just had the same thing with my 129. I went on and ordered the china made and put it on mine. It works fine for now. "TRUE" it my not last as long an original. But i'll deal with that when something happens.
I put the original on the shelf and plan on rebuilding as time and money allows.

I have had two motor generators rebuilt this year. Each would start the engine but would not charge and the bearings/bushings were noisey. I spent $110 on each repair. Hopefully, these repairs will last for many years.

If you decide to get a quote on a rebuild, post what he charges and what he is going to replace, please. Also got to ask yourself--where are his replacement parts coming from? I kind of get the feeling some of it may be overseas parts.

I bought a china SG, it worked as it should for a couple of years. The end plate is made of cast iron though, it snapped in half. I repaired my original SG after that and have been using it ever since.

Personally, I am an advocate in rebuilding the original Delco-Remy Starter Generators. Most of the S/G's have held up for 40+ yrs, and a good and proper rebuild will see the same results.
