Default My horrible Christmas surprise.

So my QL 1000 has been pretty much completed and engine after service was running like a dream. Well went to start the old girl it had done a little bit of mowing the day before maybe 30 minutes worth, started in pretty much 1 revolution left it idle while i moved stuff out of the way so i could move it, it stalled so hit the key and that horrible sound of a starter that can't crank the engine...ahhh tried to turn engine by hand no such luck..tried with a breaker bar..nope..Seized solid.. Because it ran so well didn't bother with a rebuild. Well back to the expensive drawing board.. Haven't been able to source any rebuild kits this side of the pond. So time to look at the sponsors and the other online source..ebay. Hope everyone's Christmas was lots better.

Check a couple things first.#1 unbolt starter to verify it did not fail and lock eng.#2 take pto belt off the eng.to verify the pto clutch bearing did not fail.#3 make sure the drive clutch is free and will release when you push the pedal.Good luck.

Thanks for that Mcamp, have been slowly doing most checks to make sure it isn't anything else. So far its still not looking good. Want to do engine mount mod anyway so will check it out properly on the bench.

If I can help you out shipping parts to Australia, let me know. I'll do it for cost.

It's not cheap though, the USPS raised prices a few years ago.

Thank you so much for that offer Jeff in PA, might take you up on that offer in the new year when things settle down. If i do get a rebuild kit depending on damage and if i have to oversize or anything i will have to work out rough measurements and weights. Again Thank you. Bloody good people here everywhere. . Plus will probably want parts you make hitch would be nice but that would cost way to much..

I don't know how the whole shipping things out of the country works, but this is where I buy all my engine kits. Other than shipping, you won't find a better price.

Now, I don't know how many engines you've overhauled, so you may already know, but tear it down FIRST! Take the block to a machine shop, send the crank to a regrinder, then order the kit. Do skip grinding the crank or boring it or you will be sorry. You will want to get the complete kit with new valves and tune up. If you need help on an overhaul, feel free to PM me.

As a note: I'd remove the front PTO and disconnect the driveshaft before condemning the motor. It is possible that something else failed.

Since you have a ql tractor it's also possible that something came apart with the stator or the magneto and has it jammed.

Thanks J-Mech. Yeah done a few over the years and yeah i always check everything first before my cash goes anywhere but just to give me a rough idea of price i looked up a +10 piston and -10 bottom end kit. And i'm still a strong believer in taking advice from people that have more knowledge than myself on a given subject. And seeing as this is the first and only cub i have come across all input is very bloody welcome. Had a look into this post just for any known lockup problems. And Thanks again.

Not to derail your thread, but you say its the only Cadet you have found. That leaves me with 2 questions, were there other American brands of mowers that were more popular? If not, what engines are used in what you guys do have? Kohler was by far the most popular here in "durable" machines such as Deere, Cadet, Toro, Wheelhorse, etc. Briggs and Stratton went into cheaper models usually. Some machines had Onan--but they are a lot odder and more expensive. Commercial machines such as Yazoo and Heckindorn used Wisconsin.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
