Default I broke my Original

Ok guys, I've been reading this forum and learning a lot for years, however, this is my first post. I have a 1000, a 147 (my workhorse) and an Original. I would have more, but the wife says no.

Anyway, long story short, I broke 5 teeth off of second gear in my Original. I bought it from the original owner with a mower deck for 100 bucks so I can't complain. I'm not sure what I did, but I was trying to shift it while rolling to avoid belt slip, not realizing I was hurting my favorite tractor.

At this point, I'm trying to figure out my options, I would rather fix it than replace the transmission...thoughts?

I've never been into the transmission of any original but if it's like the later ones it's not complicated at all.. I don't think it would be any problem to repair if you have basic mechanical skills.

Tear it apart and fix it. What's the question? Even if it's got more broken parts, it's fixable. Make sure you buy the correct 2nd gear, there are 3 different ratio's that will fit.

If it were mine... I would buy the tallest gear that will fit, to replace the one in question. Then I'd take all the gears out and, CHINESE FIRE DRILL. Lastly, screw the lid back on and see what happens

I ripped apart my 100 gear box.a little intimidating at first but not really a big deal.as you I blew 2nd gear .go to ebay and see if you can find a set of gears .theres a lot of guys making puller tractors and they replace factory gears..hopefully that works for a original ..I paid about 25 bucks for a hole matching set..and when you do tear it apart post questions there is a lot of good advice from members on this site..

My thoughts are that you should download the service manual and all of your how to fix it questions will be answered. Then you will become an enlightened master of all things "O".

Thanks yamachuck, I was a little intimidated as well, hence the reason for this post. I like to work on things, that's half the fun. I hadn't considered looking for an entire gear set that's a good idea, I'll start looking for those now.

Sam Mac, thanks for the link, I had the manuals for my other tractors, but not this one.

I think there is a good chance the shift for might be bent as well. Its not uncommon for the shift fork to get bent and it allows the gear to get broken. My OCC was that way when I bought it.

Yes shift forks on mine had to be welded. And I also had to replace the shaft. 10 bucks on eBay. And definitely print the procedure manual. Study it. And you'll be fine. Enjoy. I tried finding some pics I'm sure you can find in my previous post. Take note I have a 100. Originals are little different

I had a similar situation (documented with pictures here somewhere) and I did the ebay gear repair also. Mine was a mess, but it's still working fine.

Mine had been abused as a puller and had both 1st, and 2nd damaged.
