Default Cub original axle

Taking rear ended apart to replace oil seals. While doing so found out the rear axle bushing is worn into. Also need help inside axle shaft housing. All o noticed was a free floating bushing and an o ring. Shaft has a grooved key slot with nothing in it. What keeps the axle straight with the weight of the tractor. Don't understand purpose of the bushing.

Guess I don't understand the question....

The bushing in your pic is supposed to be there. There should also have been a snap ring. You appear to be missing the snap ring. Bushing in your pic is #7 in the diagram below and the snap ring is #8.

The bushing you say is wore in two... is that the one in the outer end of the axle? If so, you will have to have one made as it is NLA. You could I suppose have the axle bored and install a needle roller bearing, but make sure to get one with a lube hole and line it up with the grease fitting hole.

As far as what holds the axle: It is supported on the outer end by the bushing and the inside is supported by the differential carrier.

Does that help?

Yes thank you. I have the o ring. Too it all apart to clean up and remove broke bushing. Yes the bushing closest to the wheel is worn. Do you know of anyone that makes them?

You have what O-ring? There isn't supposed to be an o-ring in there....

I think JeffinPA made some for Zippy on his O "refresh". I'd contact him. Otherwise, I'm sure any local to you machine shop will work just fine.

Now I'm confused more than ever, do you have two different bushing problems?

One worn in two and one broken one?

And what "O" ring are you talking about.

I believe the O bushings, IH-376160-R1, are still available. The 1X2 bushings are NLA

I stand corrected. It doesn't show NLA in the listing but does if you try to add it to a cart. Partstree shows they have them in stock although that is not necessarily true. Other vendors show them also.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
