Well, being that he took the time to register, make a thread, and ask help finding what year it is, I would say YES!

My first couple of cubs I really wanted to know too, after 6 or 7 its not as important.

Unless it's a first year Original, last year IH made, or some odd set up that doesn't seem right, it never really matters. There are serial number breaks for parts, not model years for production. They never started or ended production at a set time. Production started and ended when they felt like it, or came up with a new design.

I'm not trying to make this an issue, I'm just trying to educate people that these aren't like cars. Year is completely irrelevant unless as stated above. But if you have a 4 digit "O", we all know it was made in 1961.

It is kind of neat to know if your into that stuff I suppose... but it really isn't important. Just seems this question comes up a lot, and I always wonder if it's because people think it matters, or just want to know.

I'd say it's a bit of both. Personally I wanted to know more out of curiosity than anything. I assumed knowing the model number would suffice for parts. Of course, as I learned more I realized they made changes in models by S/N, so knowing the model number is just part of what's needed.

As these Cadets are becoming antiques, then yeah. Most antique collectors just want to know, I know what year most of my antique tractors were built as well as the farm tractors (heck they are so old most consider them antiques). It is a very common asked question when diplaying antiques. But it probably doesn't make any real difference unless you want one built the same year you were born, graduated high school

Agreed on all of the above....

The first thing people ask me about all my old tractors, jeeps, trucks ,and cub cadets is "What year is it?"

So it apparently is important to most... And it's fun to know!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
