Default 127 Hydrostatic Lever Help

Hi there! Sorry to make my first post a request for help.

I'm in the midst of a rattle-can restoration for a 1970 127. I was working on removing the dash for paint, and I managed to get the steering wheel off without issue.. but during removal of the hydrostatic lever, it became apparent that a PO had both snapped off the set screw, AND used JBWeld to secure the handle onto the control rod. The end result, of course, was me breaking the lever off at the splines.

Now I need to replace the entire rod (No. 19, the "speed control rod" in the mx manual figure below). Before I tear into it - does anyone have any tips? I'm assuming I need to go in from the top (my perspective being the second image) and loosen that nut. I've already Kroil'd it, so it should be good, there. Any other suggestions on removal of the entire rod?

Thanks for your help!

If the splined shaft is still good, you can get another lever to replace it with.

Sorry, wasn't very clear - the splines from the rod are still inside the lever :-(. I'm going to need both a new rod AND a new lever. For now, I'm just trying to get the broken rod out. Any tips on removal?

Rocky, PM inbound!

Thanks!

I would use an angle grinders and very carefully split the hub on the old leaver and use an old screwdriver to use as a wedge to split it off the shaft.

It may be possible to remove the speed control rod with the assembly still in the tractor, I don't know, I've never done it that way.

From your picture it appears that the outer tube from the steering column has been removed. If that's the case, I would remove the dash tower and give yourself some space to work and a better line of sight.

It is possible to get a wrench (1-1/16" or 1-1/8" I believe) onto the nut (#21) unscrew the nut, and the rest of the pieces above the support should slide up on the rod. There is a dowel pin that does through the rod and (I believe) the friction adjustment shaft. Removing the dowel pin will free the rod from the rest of the assembly. IIRC the friction collar is slid down over the dowel and most of the friction adjustment shaft preventing the pin from falling out during use.

It may also be possible to remove the ball joint, then the nut and at that time, the rod and friction shaft may fall out the bottom. Sorry, it's been awhile.

Note: It is entirely possible that in order to unscrew the nut, the wrench must go onto the nut and then the parts must be turned while holding the nut still, the wrench removed, the parts turned back, the wrench put back on, parts turned, wrench removed, parts turned back... Until the nut can be turned by hand. Please understand that this is from memory and it's been a long time since I've done this.

If there is much rust on the dowel and connecting parts, removing the dowel will prove to be difficult at best while still in the tractor, especially if the tower is still in place.

Still, I think the easiest is to remove the assembly, make the repairs and then put the assembly back in.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info, guys. I pulled the tower off this afternoon, and got the nut taken care of without any fuss. Kroil is the real deal!

I had to come inside right bafter, so I didn't get to do much more - but it almost looks to me as if I might be better off taking apart the linkage from under the tractor, removing everything and finding an entire existing assembly, rod included. Thoughts? As of now, I can't quite tell how the rod is attached through the friction collar. It almost looks as though the dowel is integral to the rod.

Second picture is the control rod splines broken off inside the lever :-(.

As always, thanks for the help!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
