Does anyone know what, if anything is the correct position for the governor spring on the 2072 with the M20? I'm having issues with it bogging down while just sitting still. I think it's just the death throes of the Walbro carb but want to eliminate all possibilities and I'm not certain the spring is in the correct place.

If it does it when it's not loaded, the governor setting has nothing to do with it. The initial or "factory" position is in the Kohler manual.
I'd say you need to clean your fuel system and rebuild/clean the carb. |

A new carb is on order, I scoured the manuals and didn't find anything specific on the 2072 setting, just a couple pictures with the on engine throttle and a section that said something like "make sure the spring is in the correct position" but I will look again.

So I got the new carb put on and was adjusting it (waaaay better with the adjustable main jet, btw) and wanted to check my engine speed as the manual is specific about high and idle speed. I've acquired a tachometer but have to ask the n00b question, where does one measure the speed? Is it the bolt head on the pto pulley, the pulley itself, the fly wheel (a challenge on this motor but maybe doable) the drive shaft? Depending on where it's measured you will get different results, the outer edge of the fly wheel will be moving at a very different speed from the bolt head of the pto pulley. So where does one measure?

Did you find a new carb? Where did you get it?

This is, as far as I can tell, an after market copy of a kohler 26 carb that went on the kt17 engine. It requires rerouting of the choke cable (I changed the throttle cable routing to) because the lever swings the opposite direction but it was fairly easy to do and the engine hasn't run this well as long as I've owned it. If I get a chance I'll post a picture of the new routing I used. |

Why didn't you just change the choke shaft out with the original?....... That would have been easier. The KT engines didn't actually come with a #26, but a #26 is really close. |

I tried swapping the choke shafts but the screw holes didn't line up and the plates are very different. Here are some pics of what I ended up with.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
