Last week pulled my engineless 782 into the garage and started strip down. Looking to do a rebuild and painting. While I have been using and working on Cub Cadets for a few years I have not done a frame up rebuild. I am not looking to build a show tractor but just trying to go through the tractor and return it back to its glory days.
After a good cleaning and lots of unbolting I am down to the frame. My biggest problem is I purchased it as a engineless mostly complete chassis. So I can only speculate where problems might be. My first step is to clean up and replace seals on the pump and rear axle. It looks like some of the axles and pump seals where leaking. This 782 has the cast iron rear end with the internal brake. I already have the rear end drained and the pump off and will be replacing other axle and pump seals but should I also replace the seal (o-ring?) on the internal brake? Not sure how much work goes into replacing the brake seal. Not sure it was leaking but with the 1/4 inch thick oil soaked dirt on the unit, it is tough to figure what might have been leaking. |

After removing the brake lever and cleaning I was able to remove the brake lining retainer from the outside of the axle/diff case.
The o ring was rock hard. Not sure it would seal very well. How thick is the brake pad when new? Right now I am around 1/8 inch. |

Axle disassembled, gaskets removed and cleaned.
Axle seals replaced. Temporarily reassembled without gasket for painting. |

Looks like you're coming right along.
Do you have your eye on an engine already or still shopping?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
