You guys may remember my intro post, and how I recently acquired my first Cub, a 104. I found her on CL, and she looked to be a good deal. Truth be told, she still is. She needed a little work, though. The ad said running, but when I went to look at her, that wasn't the case. I was able to talk the owner down from his original price. I don't think I overpaid, by any means, but it wasn't the steal I sometimes hear about. I figured she had a stuck valve. I could feel negative pressure, at the spark plug hole, but no positive pressure. After getting it home, and tearing into her a little bit, I was pleased to find it wasn't a valve... Just a head gasket. The pic of the head shows a whole piece missing between two of the bolt holes. I took the head to work, media blasted it, and did the sand paper and glass deal on the gasket mounting surface. I then proceeded to rebuild the carb, and get fresh points, condenser, and a new plug. The spark plug the PO had in it had twice as much thread as it should've. I adjusted the valves, and points, and the voltage regulator as bet as I could. Mainly just the air gaps on the regulator. Along with some elbow grease and simple green, she's coming along nicely. The deck spindles will probably need a rebuild, but overall the deck is in good shape. I also scrapped the deck belly and sharpened the blades. My only problem, that I think I have narrowed down is a nice clacking while its running. My guess is the teaser spring. If not, it needs replaced anyway, so I'll service the whole clutch while I'm in there. I have some pics to resize, and a YouTube video to link, so I'll out those in my next post.

Man Connor I guess you did have a blown head gasket wow that may be the worst one I've seen yet. Glad to hear of another one back on the road if you will. More pics please

Here's the video, of getting her running. Any thoughts on the clacking are welcome, if you guys don't think its the teaser spring.

Yeah... I thought I had lost the chunk when I took the head off. Looked everywhere for it, just in case.

My 104 was noisy even though the PO had bored/new piston/rod etc, lately I removed the clutch for a rebuild and cranked it up and it is silent. Clutch pilot bushing and throwout bearing all wiped out, I guess 46 yrs is about the limit....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
