Should I buy the 782??

I asked about the engine if it was ever worked on or not, and if he was the original owner....response was:

The engine is about 11 years old it is a 18HP Kohler Magnum engine. I also have a new starter for it included in the price (cost $200). It seems like after I run it I have to put a battery charger on the battery before it will start again. ...as well as:
No clue on the series 1 or 2. It is electronic ignition…
I am including the starter for that price.
The deck is 48 “ it has 3 blades.
Bought it from the original owner about 11 years ago. Had to put new motor in it the first year we had it

To look at the tractor, it looks decent. What are the chances of it being a series 2 engine?, it shows a kohler 18 magnum in the picture (sticker on the air cleaner). The seat is basically screwed, doesn't have any rubber foot treads anymore, hood looks crooked, but that could be just an adjustment, no dents in it from what I can see. Dash is good, has hub caps in decent shape, no front hydralic ports, no dual brakes, no sleeve hitch, ....

What you think it is worth????

I know...same old questions....but there are lots of us out there that love to give their opinion!!

There is no series II M18...the M18 has full pressure lube and an oil filter, so that's good. It's either a 44" or 50" deck; there was no 48" deck made for the 782. It sounds like there's either a wiring problem, bad rectifier or bad stator that's causing it to not charge. I suppose it could be worth $7-800, but I'd never pay that. I'd rather have a project:biggrin2.gif:

Well, the guys said he would throw a front blade into the deal as well. I am thinking this is a decent deal....but in the back of my mind....it is almost too good to be true too!???

What is he asking for it? It would be nice to have a pair of red ones in the garage. I'm with Matt on the price. If its less than $750 I'd go for it.

Prices are climbing as inventory is low....but then you guys in Canada seem to get screwed on price anyway. As you describe is appears to be the typically neglected...maybe not abused but....

You seem to really want one....soooo....and at your prices you'll need to plan on putting a few hundred into it...BTW a starter ain't no $200 so who's blowin smoke here?????

Keep lookin...but you do what you want.


Just a thought......For someone to have owned something for 11 years the owner seems to know NOTHING about it, not deck size, and specificly not about a motor that they paid nearly $2000 and maybe more to have it installed...I'm always suspect of the ignorant...you pay $2K for something and I'll bet you'll know all about it.

Well, you kinda ....the deal kinda seems too good to be true? Unless the guy really doesn't know much about the tractor and perhaps more money to spend on things than he knows what to do with? The add's been posted since the first part of April, asking price for the tractor, front blade, and plain jane yard cart...$950. He told me in the e-mail he would take $500.00 for it.
It has the new motor in it a while ago, decent rubber, has a few little dings in it, but what tractor that age doesn't?

Just a futher thought-

I have said that it appears that the life of a good twin well maitained is about 1800 hours and this must be true as I just blew the motor in my 1811 a couple of weeks ago. Motor was getting tired anyway...now that I'm mowing with my low hour KT17 in my other tractor I see that the KT will run circles around the tired M18. The M18 has about 1850 hours on it, lost the gov and a valve.

I have a good M18 case with about 526 hours, it has bad bores but a good gov and crank and rods. So I'm using the jugs off the blown M18 and having the valve cut and I'm just going to rering the pistons. The cost of rings, head gaskets and crank seals is $125, the valve job is $100, and about $25 for the studs, so about $250 with me doing the work. Otherwise a complete rebuild will cost about $800 with me doing the work. I'm hearing others complain of Kohler prices going up...your cost up there may be around $350 for the same parts and work.

You mentioned nothing of the hours on the motor....they don't last forever and it gets expensive. Be selective.

That is the picture of the tractor, engine is also in the tractor (M18). Yes the price of $500.00 is for all three....just scratching my head a bit that it might be too good to be true, but hey, maybe I found a "deal" for once? I don't know how many hours are on it, he hasn't told me yet

The hub caps in the one pictured is worth about $180 alone...you better run and catch that deal at $500.
