C/C 2145
How do PTO clutches fail? Do they start slipping (like mine) or they fail immediately? How much current (amps) do they draw? Perhaps my aftermarket switch and wiring is too light? When I get in deep grass, I can hear the blades slow. I don't think it's the belts, don't smell burning rubber. Is there a repair or just replace?

Just my 2 cents but I have never seen an electric powered PTO slip. If you have enough amp's going to it and it's not contaminated with oil it should work. I guess it could be worn out but I have never seen that issue.

I have seen them slip when the front crankshaft seal leaks and oil gets on the clutch. If you suspect this, spray aerosol brake cleaner on the clutch while it's disengaged and then hit the high grass again and see what happens.
I also just happen to have one that doesn't engage as forcefully as other electric clutches on an 1864. No oil on it( used to have) but it just doesn't jerk into engagement like others. I think the coil on the clutch is somehow weak but it still cuts grass just fine so I'm not going looking for trouble. |

Your engine could be slowing a bit or the belts slipping some, or a combination,
but like others have said, a slipping electric clutch is unusual unless contaminated. |
