Default Cub Cadet 73, caveats?

I've decided to not go look at the 1250 that I posted about in the other section. However I did locate a model 73 south of here.

Pros:
Fully original (tires, body panels, etc)
Tires have decent tread
Comes with original mower deck (looks like 42")
No obvious signs of damage

Cons:
missing the seat
engine in unknown condition

Here's the two pics:

It't about 2.5 hours from me, so I've got a decent drive to even see it. IMHO the paint doesn't look too bad for it's age. Must've been stored indoors for all it's life. At least 80% of all the CC's in my area under the $400 mark do not have mower decks. The fact that this one does should mean it'd be easier to re-sell.
The engine being unknown is a concern but I'd be inclined to think the price would help nullify that.
Oh the owner is asking $150 for it.

Gimmie your thoughts!

You can be assured that many of us here are enablers and will say, get it. Of course, you'll have another 'cost of the tractor' in travel expenses to pick it up.

I think it depends on your ability to work on the engine if it's needed. Also, you will need a seat pan or a very tough butt.

4th lowest in production, not bad!

Even if the engine smokes, knocks or is locked up, that's a pretty good price, even I would buy it for that.

Try to get a S/G with it.

Ok potentially bad news.. I talked to the current owner, he got it for a restoration project and lost interest. Apparently it;s missing the points, starter/generator in addition to the seat.

I'm about to lookup some prices but I smell another $200+ for those three things alone not to mention the seat.

You should be able to pick up a used serviceable starter/generator for $50-75, points for so cheap it doesn't matter, and post a wanted ad for a seat/buy a cheapo one at tractor supply. Still coming out good, hard to find them for less than 300 up my way.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
