Are these wear spots on this steering box a concern? (I will dig out the assembly and see how it works, but figure there are lots of good opinions here)

You should clean up the end of the pin so you can properly adjust it when you reassemble. I chucked mine gently in my cordless drill and brushed it a few times with a flap disc on a grinder. A drill press is probably easier so you don't have to hold/run 2 tools at once, but I don't have one. It worked great and pin came out like new.

You can find new ones on fleabay with all new ball bearings for $15 shipped. Search Cam Follower for Ross steering. While you are in there you might as well do the easy steer upgrade using a thrust bearing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
