Story time... I inherited a 582 that was my grandfathers. (I have a lot of fond memories that include this tractor) He had rebuilt the engine at least one time but possibly more. It ran fine for about a year after I received it but 2 seasons ago the engine slowed and then stopped. I finally got the time to push it into my garage yesterday and began going over the basics.
- Starter is fine (pulled from engine and it runs) - Pulled the heads and other than a good build-up of carbon they and the cylinder walls look good - I am unable to turn over the engine Options: - Complete rebuild (from what I read this is not worth it) - Tear down engine in hopes that its an easy fix (not sure if this is an option) - Swap with used similar engine Questions that I have: - Is there anything that I can try to get the engine to turn (without rebuilding)? - What tractors have the below list of engines that would be best to shop for as a donor? - Other than craigslist and ebay what are good sites to find engines/tractors locally? If I do an engine swap here are the easiest engines that I have read about to complete the swap: - Kohler magnum 20 (m20) - Kohler magnum 18 (m18) - Craftsman gt6000 (horizontal shaft)- Kohler command 18 - Cub 2185, 1864, 1811, 1810, 1806- Kohler command 25 Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. |

Gran pa prolly would of liked to see a mag 18 bolt in it, or a series II, and they are around, just not as plentiful as they used to be.
Those engines are as near to original as you can get. Others here are liking to do conversions to later model overheads V twins. If it slowed then stopped, it was prolly from lack of oil to the rods on the crank, and it seized, if done @ speed they almost always holed the block with a broken rod. That is typical of series 1 engines, and they are really not worth rebuilding, and most internal parts are NLA. they had a lousy oiling system and it cost Kohler a lot of warranty replacements and it's reputation nearly. Myself, I like the M-18's/or series II, a true opposed engine is smooth and torquey. Fuel usage and emission requirements killed them. The M-18's were the last and best of the series. |

Not sure but thinking it was mentioned here an M-20 has a 1-1/4" PTO shaft.
and the electric clutches are very expensive and not very popular. yours is 1-1/8" I'm sure others will be along to confirm that or not. ![]() |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
