This is my first post so bear with me. I have an electical problem with the PTO on my 2072 and electricity is not my expertise. The tractor is stored in a shed during the winter and every 2-3 weeks it was run for 10-15 minutes.
The last time I run it, the PTO would not engage. I noticed that the hour meter was not running and the amp meter would discharge with the lights on. I followed the the following trouble shooting procedures with a test light. A. with key on--there was power to the (#5) white wire at the PTO switch. B. with PTO switch on--I checked for power to the (#3, #4, #5) white, black, brown wire with the test light. When I touched the #3 or #4 wire, the PTO suddenly engaged and the hour meter started to run. Would the relay be a problem? All connections seem to be solid. Do I have other electical problems and how do I look for them? I don't think the air gap is a problem, but I will check it Sunday. Thanks for any Help!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

As a Test, take a section of wire, long enough, to run between the "R" terminal on the Ignition Switch and to the "F or 5" terminal on the PTO Switch, and install same. See if this take care of the problem and advise.

What I ment was, when I touched terminals #3 & #4 on the PTO switch is when the PTO engaged and hour meter started to run. I will try your suggestion about the white wire from ignition to the PTO switch. I enjoy this forumn, it is a lot easier to follow than others. |

What is a little difficult to understand is this. CCC/MTD used two different vendors for the PTO Switch. One Vendor used Terminal ID as: A, B, C, D, E, F, and the other used: 1, 2 ,3, 4, 5, 6.
The Wiring Diagram uses the Alpha characters. SO....I will need to know this, what color of wire goes to what terminal. RED1 = RED2 = WHT = BLK = BRN =

Connections may 'look' good and may not be. If by moving wires and connectors you got it to work that tells me the connections are not solid. You can get a can of electrical contact cleaner at Radio Shack and clean all your contacts, electrical grease is good too. Like Bedell says check all your wires. Wires can break at the connector itself and be left with only a couple of strands holding it together...check all your grounds too. I'm a huge proponent of adding a ground wire from the battery directly to the motor.

But the wires positions are as follows: __ Red __Red |Black |Brown |White The tractor also has a directional PTO switch for the rear PTO But I think I found the problem. When I removed wire group from the key switch, the white terminal on the switch was black. I tried a male terminal in the wire goup for the white wire, it was very loose fit(could shake it out). Have to figure out how to get white femal end out to replace it. |

Check the clearance on the PTO up front with a feeler gauge and adjust if needed. I chased PTO issues for a time last summer on my 1872. It seems it had been run for so long out of adjustment that it just cooked several of the electrical components due to high amp draw. Several electrical connectors that looked good at 1st glance were indeed melted inside. Before I fully got this sorted out I had to replace the PTO because it had been damaged along with the relay and connector. Over this winter I had to replace the ignition switch and the connector due to the same thing. It just took a little longer to die.
It's really easy to adjust the PTO once you get some sheet metal out of the way and much more important than most people think that haven't had a problem YET! |
