Default 1440 steering box?

I picked up the 1440 this morning. He hit a fence and busted the steering box into pieces. I am curious if I can cut down a 128 column, and use the guts from the 1440 in it for a repair. Or, can these be setup with power steering without changing the trans? It runs great, and we drove it on the trailer using the "kick-a-tire" method!

Nope, the 1440 has a 3 turn box and the shaft is much shorter with 2 flats on it where it fits into the CV joint for the tilt wheel. Try the sponsors at the top of the page.

Glad you got it. That was a nice looking machine and even has the bagger too. Sam is spot on, call Rich Patton, I bet there are a bunch of those out there.

I'm half temped to pull the drivetrain and make it fit into my 70 I have. I think it would be cool. I want the 2cyl sound in that, and motor is trashed in it anyhow.

Just my 2 cents but the 1440 is a nice mower. I'd save it unless it's in nasty condition.

its pouring rain, and the shop is full of cars I'm working on, so I can't do much with either of them today. prob just fix it unless its got other problems, as I don't have time right now for a crazy project. but I am curious how hard it would be to make that briggs fit a narrow frame. prob just some trimming.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
