Default Opinions needed on possible 127 purchase

Hi all. I'm going to look at a 127 that is for sale priced at $250 firm. The owner says that it ran and mowed well 2 years ago. He says that the steering box broke....whatever that means. As it sits now, is it worth it?

Looks complete... to be honest ive spent more for less. Steering box is no big deal to repair/replace plenty of parts and replacements out there

For $250 its worth it even if you have to part it out. If it ran 2yrs ago it should run now so I would take a battery and try to get it going. I always caution people about buying cubs that don't run especially hydro's as there's no way to tell if the engine runs good or if it smokes a lot and without a running engine you can't test the trans, seems every time I see a cub for sale that doesn't run they always say it ran great but theres a lot of shady people out there.

I too have spent more for less, I've also been burned trusting a seller.

From the picture and going by what the seller says, it does look like it's worth the money.

If it doesn't run now, you're buying a pig in a poke.

If you have the means, take a battery, boost box, jumper cables or some other way to crank the engine, along with some gas maybe some way to spray gas in the carb., a test light to see if there is power going to/coming out of the coil, and a spark tester, to see if the plug is firing.

Then, if it doesn't start, you may have some room to negotiate.

This may all sound like a lot, but it should take less than 15 minutes to check these things and in the end if it saves you $50.00 (or more) it's well worth it.

Doing these things may also tell you that you DON'T want to spend your money on this particular machine.

Just some thoughts.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for providing me with the incite to this possible purchase. I'm not concerned with the repairs that may be needed on it, but I also don't want to be burned either. I have been watching the add for this cub for about a month. I've been looking for another cub project and have been looking for a narrow frame. This may be the one.

Thanks so much!

If you realize that this may be a project going into it and this is a model that you're interested in, I'd say go for it.

If something in the steering setup really is broken, I'd tend to believe his story that engine ran ok and he was operating it until then. In which case I'd say heck yeah, go for it. It would be like getting the whole setup for the price of a good used engine.

Yeah seems like a deal and all but just realize that you will have to spend additional cash on the machine. There's more than just getting the steering going again. A lot of times you end up having to do the 10 year ago maintenance that goes along with it. I am no stranger to testing the seller on the word firm. Check it out and make your choice. if you fall in love with it. 250
bucks is worth it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
