Default 149 Super Fast????

I recently got my basket case 149 up and running. Before I changed fluid I wanted to see it start. Purchased fluid today and before I changed hydro fluid out I took it for a test spin...So, my question is, are they all rediculously fast compared to a regular lawn mower? I literally could not run it in full throttle...or didnt really want to..lol

I also broke drive shaft pin, luckily I purchased one before hand after reading prior posts here. New pin doesnt seem extremely tight? I was thinkin I'd have to beat it in with some force, but, it was more like tapping it in...

Any thoughts on either matter would be great. Thx guys!!

I can only say that my 127 is quite a bit faster then my gear drives. Not to long ago I asked the same question about hydros running faster then gear drives and it seems that they do boogie a bit

thx garnold. I was just curious if the previous owner could have somehow changed something in gears or there is an adjustment to be made. I literally know nothing about these tractors, but am very mechanically inclined. It just didn't seem right to me that it is so fast..lol

Thx again

Totally different machine but I have GPS tested my 882 diesel and it goes 8mph on a flat road. The Hydros are definatly faster than the gear drives.

I have not had the pleasure of driving a 149 yet (need to play around at Lew's house more often hahaha) so I can't say for sure how fast they go. I was pretty surprised how fast my 127 drove since before that I really have only drove my 108 and 73 which are both gear drive. Since the 127 really motored down the street I thought I would ask the same thing you are now I don't know enough about what the PO could have mod'd on your tractor. I guess they could have messed with the gears in the trans but I would be surprised. If the engine is not rev'in like crazy I guess that's just the speed. All this being said there are lots of folks here on the forum with 149's and other tractors so they can give you a better idea how much faster it runs. A 149 is on my list of toys to get so hopefully one day I can tell you first hand

Engine is revin pretty high... Thought there was an internal govoner, but again, I know nothing about these tractors. Been reading the service manual, but it doesnt hit much in the areas I was looking for. The only way I've been able to move it around is at about 1/2 throttle. Full throttle just seems like it wants to blow up

Refer to the service manual and check your governor settings.

Maybe I have the wrong service manual. Its focuses on engine removal/splitting tractor/hydro...not sure if there are others. I've been looking on site.. I'll keep at it..

Sounds like you should check your rpm's if it "seems like it wants to blow up"
Better now than later, after the fact.
As far as speed, I haven't a clue on mph, but they do clip along at a pretty good pace.

The governor might have broke and it's not working properly. Do you have an RPM gauge? You should be in the 3200 to 3800 range.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
