A friend just sold a running 126 with a deck in operating condition for $650. This was not a restored machine by any means, just been kept in running order and was used all last year. I didn't realize until today that it was the third rarest Cadet. With no pics to go by, assuming it is a stock bare bones machine with no frills (tractor and deck only) was that a fair price?

Anytime someone posts a thread on "what is it worth?", then the answer is both simple and complex. The simple answer is that the value of anything is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it as with anything else you sell. The more complex answer is dependent upon many factors, some you can control and others that you cannot. Some of these factors are: location (small items are easily shipped, but others are not), condition, season (some things tend to bring more money in a season when they are needed than in the off season), rarity (though with the internet, I am not convinced that anything but honesty is rare these days), usefulness, then that affects value and that brings in other factors, like if that specific model(s) are desirable to have/use. Okay, I am sure that I forgot a lot, but someone else will kindly suggest that for you.
I got my 126 with chains, IH weights, IH windbreaker soft cab, snow/dirt blade, and some extra goodies for less than 1/4 of your friends price. So, he did really well for himself to get that price!! ![]() Cub Cadet 123

Thanks guys. I figured he did well, I estimated it at around $2-400 until I saw its rarity, then I got concerned. According to him the guy that bought it intends to mow with it, he's not a collector.

Rarity doesn't necessarily equate to high values. Chevette diesels are rare. VW Dashers are rare.
I think at $650 he got every dime out of an unrestored 126 that he could. He did well.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
