Default 1250 steering overhaul and upgrade

Over the next week or so I will be working on the steering on my 1250. After getting this tractor running I have come to the realization that I like it more than my 149. So it will be replacing my 149 as the primary tractor. A little history on the tractor before I start. I bought this tractor as a none runner for the 3 point. I did get it running at one point but engine turned out to be bad. It sat for awhile was going to trade it but the deal fell through so there it sat. And then i came across another 1250 with a bad frame. Moved the engine and hyd lift from the other one to this one and now have nice tractor. I got a set of NOS IH iso mounts for the engine and it just runs so smooth.

So the plan is to install a 3 turn steering wheel and overhaul the steering box. Also an axle from a 1541 GT with some new tires.

The pics I have so far.

I did not like the way the steering plate is warped from being welded so I took it to work with me today and straightened it.

The axle does. The axle is is out of a cyclops tractor and is of a much better design then the original axle. When the tires turn they will tilt onto there side and it causes them to grab more traction. This axle turns tighter as well. The three turn steering sector out of a jd gives you more steering power at the cost of having to turn it more.
Here is the article that inspired me to do the upgrade. http://cubfaq.com/supersteer.html

I thought I did see that brought up somewhere but did not know for sure. If somone could post what tractors had it it could be future help for someone. The steering gear I used came out of a JD110. I could not put the whole column in because it does not have the bolt holes in it.

Some pics showing the axle turning.

Some pics comparing the old axle to the new one. The new axle is taller than the old one. I did know this prior to swapping the axles but forgot to measure the height of the frame before and after.

I think it started in the '82 series. Not near any of my '82 or I'd check. QL's didn't for sure.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you use the shaft out of the JD and just put it in the box off your tractor? Then you would have the mounting holes.

That is what I did I should have worded that better. That is why the shaft sticks out so much from the new column. In the pic the bottom one is modded the top is factory.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
