I am trying to figure out what exactly is wrong with my 125. I have never had to mess with my drive shaft, so I don't know how it was prior to my issue. During its last use, I suddenly lost drive functionality and I heard a squealing. I determined that the transmission linkage was still functioning. I took off the housing between the dash and the engine and noticed the engine was driving the shaft up to what appears to be a coupling. But behind the coupling it is not turning. I have looked in my manuals and online and don't seem to see the identical setup. So I am wondering if this is a homemade repair. Can anybody assist me in determining what the fix is?
I circled the point at which it is disconnected. Thanks, Dan |

Someone welded the driveshaft to the coupler.

looks like mr sawzall to the rescue.It is the only way to get it out as it will not fit through the hole in the shroud the driveshaft passes through

I make driveshafts and I'll make a drive coupler too. Check to see if your driveshaft has an intact fan on it too ( I don't have those )

So the thick part of the hub that is still welded to the shaft split from the thin part that has the bolt holes in it?

The first photo is after I unbolted the broken hub.
I guess I don't completely understand what the correct coupling is supposed to look like. Does the drive shaft just have a pin through it that turns the coupling that is bolted to the flywheel drive cup assembly? I also see configurations where people have a flex coupling to absorb shock as shown in the second photo I attached. What is the original configuration and what is the best configuration? |

The first pic is the O.E.M. setup when the cross pin is NOT welded to the coupling.
The second pic is the cure for the ever so slight mis-alignment that caused yours to work harden and break at the thin-to-thick point of the welded coupler on yours. |
