Default 109 pto failure?

Just replaced my 5 year old drive belt with a cub belt. Mowed about 15 minutes then an awful racket. Mower almost died but I disengaged the pto and ran fine. Tried to reengage but would kill . Opened the hood and looked while doing it and same thing. Did the pto just happen to fail just like that?

The first question is; Does this PTO have a brake or is it the kind without a brake?

I don't know if I understand, "Mower almost died", did the mower almost die or did the engine almost die?

I don't know of any situation where the PTO would fail and kill the engine... Normally when the PTO fails, it either slips or won't disengage. Unless it has come apart and I still don't know if that would kill the engine.

It sounds like you have something jammed up under the deck.

I did have a belt come apart one time and one of the "strings" from the belt wrapped around one of the deck pulleys and nearly killed the engine.

If all else fails take the belt off and see if the pto is working as it should.

Thanks Sam
Feel like an idiot. Big old stick jammed under the mower deck where my wife took out 30 yr old lilacs.
Never had that happen. Mower usually eats up anything!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
