Tractor supply never carried hytran. Use what you want, the long and short is purists say hi Tran, everybody else says there is a dozen acceptable substitutes out there (I use travellor universal fluid). That's all I'm saying, the next time I come back to this thread it will be for the show.

Default TSC Vs HyTran

I would like to post some observations and hopefully I can keep my opinion low key.
Some on here swear by HyTran saying it is the only oil that should ever be put into the hydro of a cub. Others are more than convinced that TSC premium hydraulic oil (or other premium brand X) meets hytran spec. If you look at a bucket of TSC oil carefully, it does not say that it meets HyTran spec, or JD spec or AC spec or any other spec. It states that it is "Recommended for" use where these other specs are used. Big difference. Recommended by whom? It may meet the spec, but it may not. Is it suitable for use in a cub hydro? No question the HyTran oil is a superior oil. I can't speak for the exact spec of the oil, but I do believe that one of the major differences is the way the oils react to the presence of water. Some oils mix with the water and make it milky and others do not.
Another observation is that these hydros are not manufactured by International or Cub Cadet. The older ones are all manufactured by SunStrand. I don't know which ones are which, but some of the newer ones are manufactured by Hydro-Gear. What do the manufacturers recommend? If you go back and look at SunStrand specs, they give a spec much broader than what you find in HyTran. Hydraulic oil, ATF, most any engine oil. It doesnt matter much. Most oils (not gear oils) meet SunStrand specs. Some people are using 5w-30 engine oil in sunstrand units with excellent results. So you decide if TSC hydraulic oil is suitable for use in your cub.
As to the filters, I wouldn't put on just any junk filter, but I am not opposed to using aftermarket if it is good quality. I personally like Wix filters. They are a high quality filter. The Wix filter number is 51410 for the IH built and the CCC built tractors. Napa Gold filters are also manufactured by Wix. The Napa number is 1410.
I hope this helps someone and I hope I haven't offended anyone. Have a blessed day.

Very well stated. In my CC149, Hy-tran and the CC filter has worked for 40 years, thats ggod enough for me.

[Hijack] My dad gave me his old 1541 and it has never had the trans/hydraulic oil/fluid changed in the 12 years we've owned it.

Just wondering if its easy to look at and figure out how to change it? Any tips and tricks? Tutorials? Link to a maintenance/owners manual? Is 7 quarts the correct amount? [/Hijack]

12 years with no service, OUCH.

Link for manuals
http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/Public.do

Warm it up, jack up the rear, remove the drain plug at the bottom near the front of the trans case with a pan that will hold 2 gals. Remove the filter. Replace the filter and fluid. You fill through the dipstick tube under the seat.

Welcome to OCC! It's definitely time to change the fluid.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
