Hi everyone,
I have a 782D that I was plowing with a few weeks ago. As I was going from forward to reverse, the tires stopped turning (either direction) and the plow dropped all the way to the ground. The engine was running fine. I can't figure out the problem. The engine starts and runs great. It just won't transfer any power to the wheels and the hydro lift for the plow/mowing deck doesn't move. I checked the assembly from the lever on the dashboard to the transmission and everything is intact. It only has 465 hours on it. I bought it with 416 hours on it 2 years ago. I'm not sure when the hydro fluid was last changed, but I never changed it. It's not low on fluid and there are no leaks. I had no problems with the lift or transmission before this problem. Any help/advice would be appreciated. I was looking to sell the tractor, but I need to get this issue straightened out. Paul |

Check the driveshaft.

I'm not completely up on my knowledge of 782s but I do know that if the drive shaft quits then everything from the engine back quits. On the older models there are spiral pins that can break causing the same issue- check to see if this is an issue.

Clogged filter or problem with the relief valves (stuck?). I would start with regular service of it by changing the fluid and filter and then pull the check valves and inspect them.

Check valves sounds like it would cause symptoms. I think if it were a driveshaft/pin issue the plow would not have dropped but maybe I'm wrong

So far all good suggestions, and I agree that you should probably change the fluid and filter, especially if you don't know the history of the machine.
I too am a little puzzled by the blade dropping. However, before anything, I would check the input shaft on the trans to make sure it's turning with the drive shaft (and engine) the pin on the back coupler can break and you can't tell that it's broken.

It would seem to me that if the shaft was sheared then there would be no pressure to hold up the plow or drive the tranny. Does that model have power steering? If so then that would not work either.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
