Default Mechanical PTO question

I have a 149 im putting getting ready to put a tiller on. Here is my problem I have put new locking collar and bearing and have put on 3 different pto"s on and my question Is its getting really hot. were u cant even touch it hot. I have done at least 10 pto rebuilds and haven't came across this problem. not sure if its the bearing I purchased or what. I checked my 169 and the pto clutch wasn't even warm. any help would be appreciated.

If you've tried three different PTO's, then ( by process of elimination ) it would seem to be the bearing.

Does the tiller gear box turns easily and smoothly? ( does it have oil in it ? )

Does the belt sit too far down in the groove? ( is it worn too far where the sides don't get good contact? )

I had a 129 that had the mechanical pto get really hot. Come to find out, I had a brass button that remained slightly in contact with the pto even when the pto was engaged, so friction added heat. Do you have a brass wear button or a carbon fiber one. If you have a brass one, check your clearance while the pto is disengaged (obviously without the engine running).

I agree with the others. Either a belt alignment issue, and the belt heat is being transferred to the PTO, or the button is in constant contact.

I have nothing connected. My goal is to put a tiller on it. I dont have anything attached. Sorry fot connfusion. I have the clutch brake type system on it. Ill get some pics later.

With no belt on, the pto will rotate even if not engaged unless the button friction is able to stop it.
Maybe the spring plate is bottoming out against the end of crankshaft when the pto is in the disengage position?
Due to bearing too far onto crankshaft?
I have a pto from a P.O. and I can see where that was happening as the crank side of the spring plate is all worn pretty good.

Does it get hot when the pto is engaged with no belt? It should not unless the bearing is bad or the set screws are allowing slippage on the bearing.
