Default 60" Haban

My son and I have been busy! The plan is to do a restore and that is pretty much it. It will be getting a new bearing in the idler pulley but the rest of the bearings are tight and quiet. We have been wire wheeling things to get the majority of the paint off. Next we'll pull the deck pulleys and bearings and sand blast the shell. Hoping to get it painted in the next few weeks. Pics attached (of course)!!

Darrell

The complete spindle assembly will come out through the top, no need to remove the pulleys. Here are a couple threads I did on my Habans.

Unbolt the 2 plates on top to clean under them--one is for the idler pulley the other is for the lift. I drilled out the rivets for my serial tag so I could clean under it as well. Check your front gage wheels, the area the wheel axle bolts to likes to bend.

Thanks Allen, Sam and John... Yeah, I am planning on tearing things off as soon as I can get some of the worst off... the plan is to sand blast those pieces separately once I do pull them off. Thanks for that info Sam... I didn't think I would have to pull the pulleys off but I was a little concerned about getting sand into the bearings... Are they sealed up really nice?

DO NOT SAND BLAST the spindles, they only have shielded bearings with no real seals. I only wire brush them and paint them. Take them off the deck before you blast it.

Anyone ever had to rebuild the spindles with new bearings? As far as we know the ones on my 2072 are original (we've kept track of all the service work on the mower since it was new). The ones on my 982 SEEM OK, no lost motion, haven't really run the deck over a couple minutes.

Yep just did the deck for my 2182.

These are what I used for bearings.

as I said in the post I removed the inner seal to allow the grease to be able to pass through them.

Sam, seems like your deck needed the same things mine did, other than bearings. I had to rebuild the gage wheels as well. Made some improvements with regard to bushings and hardened pins. One set of the wheels got bearings. Great decks overall, could have been a little better built when it came to the gage wheels in my opinion.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
