Well, a little while back I asked some questions about ported rears on a 129. I mentioned that I had a friend who had one, and that he wanted to make it hydraulic lift. Well, I thought it time to start a thread on it.
My friends name is Chris. He caught the "bug" after watching me play with my cubs. He has a 129 that he has had for years. It was his grandfathers. Only duty this thing has ever had was mowing. Chris always wanted to find a tiller, but never could find one. He asked me to help him locate one. Well it might have taken me all of an hour and I had one spotted near Indianapolis. (About a 2.5hr drive from us.) Some phone calls and a few days later he went and picked up the tiller. Along with a 54" blade, Brinly adapter and a nice (newer) cub cadet cart. He slapped the engine back together on the 129, but as people do when they get excited, didn't want to take the time to do the rebuild "correctly". Motor lasted about 6 hrs. So, the tractor is now here at the shop with the engine out and tore down. We'll get it rebuilt and put back in as soon as machining is done. In the mean time, parts are showing up from the ol' mail truck to do the hydraulic lift conversion. Bought a sleeve hitch, ported hydrostat, and all related parts for the conversion. Plan is we are going to leave the manual lift on (it's spring assised) and move the cylinder to the rear for the rear hitch only. Then modify a mule drive to accept the blade, so that way he can till and leave the blade on. His intentions are to use the tiller to work up dirt, and blade to level it out. This way, he has separate lifting front and rear and won't have to switch implements back and forth. For the time being here are some pics of the tractor we are working with. It is a VERY NICE 129 if I do say so myself. ![]() IMG_20140207_000545.jpgIMG_20140207_000529.jpg IMG_20140207_000517.jpgIMG_20140207_000507.jpg IMG_20140207_000426.jpg I will post the progress as we go! |

Crank journal for the rod was out of round. He put a new rod on it..... after sanding it with emry cloth. Honed the cylinder with out even taking the crank out. Washed the block with diesel. After 6 hrs run time, drained the oil. Aluminum shavings in it. When we tore it down.... an almost galled rod journal.

Couple of good projects there. He has a good helper. Adding the hydraulic lift sounds good. Take lots of pictures. That is a good looking tractor.
Regards, Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
