Default 1650 runs rough between WOT and idle

Hi Guys...new to the forum. Looked at a 1650 today. Purrs at idle and runs great at WOT, however, sounds like it's going to stall when feathering the throttle from WOT to idle. Get down past that point and it purrs like a kitty. Is this common or a problem lurking...??? FWIW, I'm told that engine was rebuilt abt. 20 hours ago.

Any help or comments appreciated...!!!

Thanks !

Welcome to OCC!

No, it should run smooth, no matter how fast you move the throttle, and at all positions. It has something wrong. Probably not major. Unless it "surges" in-between, then it may have a governor problem.

Could need the governor adjusted, the carb rebuilt or adjusted, or I've seen a bad condensor do that as well. As long as it doesn't smoke like a chimney or knock like crazy, it could and should be something simple. Price accordingly. Keep us posted and good luck.

Default Runs rough

I pulled my hair out over my 149 that ran "goofy" after a rebuild. It would idle, and run around the yard just fine, then suddenly go into a missing and backfiring shaking spell.

I tried everything I could think of and finally homed in on the point setting. I messed with that probably 1/2 day and suddenly it started running better, changed them a little and still ran better. Finally, it runs like it should and starts right up. It was the points all the time.

Thanks to all for the kind welcomes...

OK...I did it...!

We're buried in a foot of snow with another nor'easter predicted...(I hope not...!). Seller agreed to keep it in his garage until the weather gets a little more cooperative. He said it was rebuilt about 20 hours ago, repainted a few years ago by a body shop (paint still pretty nice), new mounts, new front tires and a 50" mower deck. This had been his primary machine until it needed the rebuild. He purchased a 2nd one (1995 vintage) and now didn't need two machines. He told me I could chose the one I wanted. I took the older one based on the fact that I thought it was a better built machine (and it was less money, to boot...!).

Now...another question...!
What recommendations might anyone have regarding the addition of a plow to make my life (and to lighten the load on my tired old back...) a little easier...?
What models will fit...?? Best size...?

TIA (this is a GREAT forum and source of information !)

Welcome, flkeysdude. This is THE PLACE for all things Cub Cadet, from the IH made Original Model through the current MTD machines.

If you have an issue with your tractor, someone here can help with that.

Again, welcome. Pull up a chair, put on the coffee and stay a while.

Glad to hear you got the shudders sorted out.

By plow I assume you mean the front dozer blade? Your 1650 is what is known as a WIDE frame Cub, easily differentiated from a NARROW frame by the fact that the tunnel cover (sheet metal between seat and control column) is removable.

The most common IH front blade is 42" wide. The blade for the W or N framed Cubs is the same, but the carriage is different. Known as the "sub frame," it will have two trailing arms that reach back and attach to the Cub's frame, down below the seat area. The easiest way to tell a W from a N sub frame is to look at these arms. On the N they are straight as a board, on the W they actually bend IN towards each other and the UP to the frame. People can get a W confused for a N.

So when you find one, don't necessarily rely on a craigslist seller to get this right, have a look at pics before you travel to buy one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
