Default Why did my PTO die?

We finally get enough snow for me to try out my 682 w/QA-42A combo not only at home, but at the large lot at work. So, as a test, I pull out of my garage at home, turn on the blower, and give it heck. Worked great! So I finish up at home and head for work. I pull in and flip the PTO switch. Nothing. So, frustrated, I turn around and head back home, thinking it might be a weak battery. So I get home, pull a good, solid battery from another machine and try that; nothing. At this point I'm out of time to mess with it so I "quickly" pull it off and hook it up the 129 and go to work. Long story short, that belt smoked/shredded about an hour into work so that was a bust. Anyhow, what could cause this PTO to work one minute then not again? Any suggestions are welcome, I've got little experience with PTO's on these as they've always just...worked.

Bad switch, wire broke, old PTO bearing siezed up under the stress and from heat of use? A few of the members here have had success replacing the bearing and will hopefully chime in with ways to check it.

Find out if you have 12 volts at the wire that connects to the field coil. If you do my guess is the field coil gave up. Could be the bearing in the armature. Here are some part numbers, sources and prices.

I'm pretty sure that the 682 and the 1050 both have a fuse. Also, a bad connection at the PTO switch, or key switch can cause that. Turn the PTO on and wiggle the plug on both and see if it kicks on.

More than likely a loose fuse, fuseholder or other electrical connection.

My PTO would work great while cutting grass and then the first time I stopped I could not get it to work until it cooled down a little. Drove me nuts for a while. It turned out to be that the mounting plate where it makes its electrical ground was rusted / corroded. Once I cleaned it up it has worked with no issues since.

To check the coil of the PTO you can use an ohm meter. You should get about 3-4 ohms from the wire coming in to ground if its good.

I'd vote for the fuse or fuse holder. Got my fingers crossed for ya!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
