1st time Cub owner and have a 149 with a bad engine. Has anyone of yoos guys ever repowered one of these models? I have two good running engines sittin around. Old Briggs opposed twin, and about a 1970 Wisconsin s12d 12 horse. K321 has a broken rod and messed up crank, Don't know what else right now.
Just wanted some experts advice on subject before I proceed with project. Thanks for any input....... |

I have been wondering lately if a Kohler Command Horizontal shaft would fit in the engine bay? I think that would be a real nice repower.

Is this going to be a worker or play tractor?
Did you get a quote on what it will cost to rebuild the orginal engine? I would not not repower your 149 with either engine. Parts for Briggs and (not sure on) Wisconson are no longer being made.

Anything is possible with the right tools! I would stick with a Kohler though.

I've used multiple engines in multiple machines and a horizontal shaft single cylinder Kohler is my preferred.

If possible, I'd rebuild the existing engine. short of a hole in the block, there isn't much that can't be fixed.

As Merk said try to rebuild what you have. If it's beyond repair I'd look for a 2160, 2164, 2165 or 2185 for a donor engine. First 3 have Vanguard 16HP's the 2185 has a Kohler CH18. I took these pics a couple years ago at a plow day.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
