102 with a replacement motor that is very sound. Grote light on back,headlights,3 point and spring assist. Deck has been patched,but still mows great. Have a couple trouble spots to iron out. 1 is when the steering is turned,the center shaft the steering wheel is attached to threads up out. Not great steering either. 2 is the clutch was replaced as well as throwout bearing and clutch spring,as well as the bracket the adjustment bolt goes through.That bracket hits the steering column when the clutch is pushed in. I am thinking it is the wrong piece as it is notched out but still contacts the box. May have some wiring issues as the battery wires are colored wrongly(red on neg,black on pos) needs to have a battery charger to fire up, but its sweet sounding. Is there a fix for the steering columns??

Nice 102. The steering column can be fixed. It sounds like the bearings in the steering box are shot. You should be able to get away with replacing the bearings and bearing cups.

That's a beauty Pat!
Don't run it too much without fixing the steering. Maybe you can avoid a catastrophic failure if you get there early enough. For the wiring, my 126 I think was positive ground. I still need to decode that mess! I'm thinking someone found a wrong direction starter-gen and went to a lot of effort to make it work on mine. It did work, and charge. The ammeter went backwards was the only thing wrong that I know of. Like I said, I'm not sure about the polarity, but I do know + was grounded, and - was attached to the solenoid. Definitely NOT factory. Enjoy that new machine! I passed one up that the guy wanted $600 for, hadn't run for years, etc. Someone said it ought to be worth that, and apparently someone else agreed.

I would just go through the steering and get it right now. Once you get it out (which is relatively easy) it's all bench work. Replacing the bearings isn't that costly and there are tricks to dressing up the follower stud. You need to check the plate with the bolt welded to it for flat. I have found several that are warped from the welding apparently. You can fix this in a shop press using a straight edge as you go to get it flat. I'd automatically get a new gasket too. You can even do an upgrade that's written up maybe in the library that uses a bearing and lock nut instead of the two jam nuts. It helps a lot with the steering. I'd do the same with the clutch. Go through it now and get it right and the tractor will be nice to you for many years to come. As far as that goes I'd do everything needed now so you'll always have a dependable cub. You got it for a great price so the money you saved can be put into all I've stated. It shouldn't take that much in it's condition. Good luck with your "new" cub....Wayne |
