Default Under drive pulleys?

I'm wondering if there are different sized pulleys available for the "original"? I need to slow down more, but trying to avoid the expense of the creeper upgrade. I'm thinking a smaller engine pulley and the biggest one that can fit at the driveshaft. How do they attach and is this a reasonable thought?

What are you doing that you need to slow it down?

The pulley on the driveshaft cannot be changed,it is part of the clutch, the one on the motor can.

I feel that it goes too fast. Ex. When you're mowing it needs more time to cut and more torque to go. Currently it strains to cut and go up a .75% grade in my yard. I would love to have the creeper gear but I don't and was informed that it is expensive.

Ok drive side no. Engine side maybe? What does the end of the crank look like? Tapered? Keyway? Has this been done?

Let's make sure we are on the same page here. You put the word original in quotes, so we assume you have a cub cadet "original". That is correct isn't it? I've not yet heard, or experienced the problem you state, that wasn't related to another problem. So, lets eliminate some problems before you go modifying something that doesn't need it.

*First off, are you sure the engine is running properly? Is it reaching max RPM?
*Which motor does it have?
*Are you running the original two blade "timed" deck? Or something different? If not that deck, what size is it? Does it have the proper pulleys on it?

You say you were told creepers were expensive..... what price were you told? Because "expensive" is a relative term. They are out there, and cost less than a new mower.
I would be hesitant to change the pulleys..... I've never heard anyone say that an "O" wouldn't go slow enough to mow. But, there are few people who use their "O" to mow with still.

I understand the need for a slower travel, this machine is 10HP, and has a 36" deck.

There are times when slower travel would be nice. Even with 10HP, it will run out of power.

BUT, I think it really relates to the height of the grass.

If the OP mows more often, the Original will do a great job at its current speed.

If the grass gets too tall, mow twice.

My SIL lets his grass get to tall between mowings, then he has to cut every 3-4 days to get it under control again.

Also, how low is the deck set? If the deck is set to cut at 3" or higher, the machine can go faster, IMHO.

Ok ok.yes it's an original. 7hp. Factory timed deck. The stopper holds deck up 2 or poss 3 notches from full droop (lowered). Yes the first time I cut it was past due considering I only had a push mower before. The belts were loose and looks like the small V belt on the deck is maybe a 1/2 inch too small as The blades spin without engaging the foot pedal, not full speed, more parasitic drag, but making it harder to turn and putting more pressure on the bearings.

I am just used to "tractor" gears. I was quoted 450 for the creeper setup. I imagine I could buy a rotting O with the creeper in it cheaper.

I'm a avid four wheeler and run Suzuki Samurai's. I change the transfer case gears from 2.26:1 to 4.16:1 in low and it allows the 50hp engine to power the little 4x4 over impressive obstacles.

I just need to get the creeper and be happy. Thought a pulley change would be a common thing. Oh well.

I wouldn't give up on the engine pulley idea. Member C5 rider on here has an O with a different pulley size that's aluminum and is his puller. Not sure if it was bought or made but send him a PM and he would probably be willing to get you dimensions.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
