Last week while mowing, I noticed it was slowing down more than usual, ( the longer I operated it, the slower it went), going up the 2 grades from my neighbor's yard to my yard. I also noticed the tractor was bucking, (almost stop, then resume speed), while backing down her driveway. Didn't really think much about it until this week. I use the lock on the shifter to maintain the same ground speeds as I mow several of the retired neighbor's yards. This week, while mowing my other neighbor's flat yard, the tractor was taking longer to get up to speed. Then when mowing my yard with the grades, I had to move the lock on the shifter, and move the handle further up to climb the grades. This tractor also picks up speed when going downhill. Enough speed that I have to pull down on the shifter and slow it down. I had changed the hydro oil at the beginning of the season because the rear cover plate gasket was leaking. I checked the oil level and it is correct and clear. I think the filter was changed 2 years ago when I put new springs and keepers in the trunion. Neutral is perfect, no tire movement. Any ideas what I need to look at? I intend to pull the fender pan this weekend and check the trunion.

Will do, thanks Roland! Should the oil and filter be changed annually?

replaced the filter, NAPA Gold 1307. Cured the slowing up hill, but I still have the bucking in reverse.

I have looked thru the manual, but I didn't see anything for adjusting the linkage on a QL. Saw for the 100 series.

I pulled both 1450s side by side yesterday afternoon and jacked up on wheel on each. The shifter and linkage on both seem to be fine. everything moves together on both tractors. I did notice on #2 that when the wheels were turning under power, and the brakes applied, there is a noise in the hydro with the pedal depressed. If I let up on the pedal, the wheels lurch slightly, forward if the hydro was in forward, reverse if the hydro was in reverse. and then apply the brakes again, no noise. The shifter must be moved 1 inch forward before the tractor moves and 1 1/4 inch in reverse before the tractor moves.

![]() The linkages have their own design characteristics for each series, but the principal is the same for all. The Sundstrand Hydro was first introduced on the 123 and basically remained the same into the 1980's. Thus, any Cub Cadet Service Manual, with reference to the model ranges mentioned, using the Sundstrand Hydro Unit, will work. The linkages and levers have to be free from being loose or sloppy. The "trunion" has to have no wear on it. The Relief Valves need to be clean and the internal parts have to move freely, And lastly. a good Hydro Oil and Hydro Filter. This basically will get your Hydro Tractor to run correctly. ![]()

I got the shifter adjusted as close to neutral as I could. I jacked up both rear wheels. Tractor was warmed up and I adjusted neutral. With the tractor in forward and brakes applied, then released, the wheels stop turning. With the tractor in reverse, then the brakes applied and released, the wheels keeps spinning, rite faster than the left. If I hold the brake pedal down, the rite wheel keeps spinning. I turned the linkage from the shifter to the cam in both directions and I couldn't get the tires to stop spinning. What am I missing here? 1st left pic is jacked up, 1st rite is forward to neutral, after brakes were applied and released, 2nd down left is reverse to neutral, brakes applied then released. 2nd down on rite is reverse to neutral, brakes applied and held down. 3rd now on left is neutral. I couldn't get a picture of the frustration.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
