Default Transmission Main Shaft Replacement

Anybody done a rear end main shaft replacement? I've got a 126 that wouldn't go into 2nd or 3rd gear. I was hoping it was just a bent shift fork, but when I took the shifter cover off, both forks were fine. After looking a little more I found that the main shaft is twisted and that's what is preventing the gear from sliding on the shaft. I was able to bang it loose so it will now go into second gear fine. But the twist in the shaft won't let it slide forward into 3rd.
Wondering if anyone has replaced that shaft and how much of a pain it is?

to replace that shaft you will have to remove the reduction housing and then take the bolts out that hold the bearing retainer and then use a long punch and tap the main shaft out letting the punch go with the shaft and hold the gears while you get the other shaft back in done this a few times

Kratt, use the search function on this website, search "transmission rebuild". I posted pics of my gear drive rebuild, that may help you a bit. It's exactly as Ray described. It's not difficult, just time consuming.

Great pics TommyK. Those will help a bunch.
What did you guys use for a punch? I'm thinking a length of pipe?
Also, does the shaft slide out relatively easy or does it take some good whacks to get it going?

Kratt, i have a thin metal punch, handmade, about 8 inches long that i used. It's a hand me down, i don't know what it was originally intended for. If u have a pipe the correct diameter that will fit in there, that should work. I used a rubber mallet to tap the punch, both shafts i removed came out easily. I have a spare tranny completely dissasembled, if you need any pics of something, let me know.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
