Default 1650 Hydro Leak at Hydralic Lift Cylinder

Another issue with the Cub Cadet 1650. I am using it with a QA36A snowblower. The tractor started leaking hydro trany fluid, the lift would raise and then lower on its own. I turned off the tractor. Looking at the lift area the leak was spraying forward into the engine but I couldnt tell where it was coming from. I supspected the lower hydro hose as it was coated pretty good with spray. I cleaned up the area using brake cleaner, refilled the trany fluid started the tractor, noticed no leak until I pushed the lift lever and the leak appears to be coming from the end of the hydralic lift cylinder where the bracket assembly lift connects to the hydralic lift cylinder. Is this fixable or do I need to replace the entire hydralic lift cylinder and if so where can I get one as the Cub Cadet Parts shows that it isnt avaiable. Any one of any aftermarket parts that will work? Any advice and guidance is appreciated.

Thanks

Cleon

If you're sure it's the cylinder itself that's leaking, you can easily get on used for cheap.

Thanks aagitch,

I have been checking online an only found one on Ebay. The Cub Cadet Parts site shows the part is no longer available. Any ideas of where to look for a used hydralic lift cylinder? Also any idea what might have cause the hydralic lift cylinder to leak?

Thanks

Cleon

ihnick,

Thanks for the reply, I checked the lines under the tunnel cover and do not see any thing indicating a leak everything is dry. The Hydro fluid is coming out from where the Lift Assembly Bracket attaches to the Hydralic Lift Cylinder. Is it possible one of the hoses connecting to the Lift Cylinder has a blockage which is causing the Lift Cylinder to leak?

Thanks
Cleon

If #16 in the diagram is an o-ring, I'm guessing that is your problem. They do get stiff and crack or take a set and start leaking.

16 is an O-ring. That could be the problem.

Here is an update of what I found today. Looking at the diagram and then how the hoses are hooked up on our 1650 I noticed that someone (previous owner?) connected the lower hose directly into the hydralic lift cylinder instead of a 90 degree hydro flared adapter part 19 on the diagram. I got a new 3/8 OD O-Ring and tried to get a 90 degree hydro adapter at Farm and Fleet but they didnt have the right size. I am going to try to get the right part and put it together the way the diagram shows and see if that fixes the leak. I currently have the hydralic lift cylinder out of the tractor as this was the only way to disconnect the lower hose from the hydralic lift cylinder. I covered all the openings with rags to prevent anything from getting into the system. Beyond adding hydro trany fluid is there anything I need to do when i get this all hooked up or can I just test it and then top off the hydro trany fluid once the system has worked any air in the system?

Thanks,

Cleon

I would think that if you top off your oil before you test it and do it again after a few cycles of the cylinder to get the air out, you should be good to go. I haven't needed to do this on my 1450 yet.

Thumbs up

Update - After getting a fitting to connect to the hydralic lift cylinder, I connected everything and it was still leaking but this time it became clearly evident it was the lower hose. Got a new hose put it in tested and no leaks! Ran the lift up and down no problem, topped off hydro Trany fluid just in time to snowblow 4 inches in the drive. Originally it looked like the leak was coming from the cylinder because the leak in the hose was spraying the Lift Assembly Bracket where it attaches to the hydralic lift cylinder. Once I put a new O-Ring and adapter into the mix I think it created a better seal and exposed the hole in the hose. Thanks for everyone's input. Everytime I fix something on a Cub I gain more confidence but I hope it keeps running trouble free for a while.

Thanks

Cleon

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
